School Year: 2011-2012
Teacher
My name is Julian Barnes and I am pleased to be your instructor for this year. Would you believe that I was once a student at the GLS? It's true! I began teaching at the school in 2004. I have a German-American bi-cultural background and learned German at home as a native language. My credentials include: a Master in Teaching degree from Seattle University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington. Exploring the world, playing the guitar and cooking are some of my interests.

Students
The students in the class come from a wide variety of backgrounds with a blend of German skill levels. Many, but not all, have Germanic heritages. It is my hope that all students are attending because of a genuine desire to learn about Germany's people, culture, and language.
Expectations/Behavior
Students in this class will conduct themselves as model students and positive examples for others. Standard classroom etiquette also applies at German school – raise your hand to ask a question, ask to use the restroom, respect your classmates and so on. Should there be any issue, I will try to handle it in class, however parents will be notified if necessary. Cell phones and other electronics are to be turned off during class time.
Students are expected to be active participants in all activities. Everyone should come to school prepared to learn with all necessary materials (pencils, spiral vocabulary notebook, copies of handouts, homework, textbook etc.) During whole-school activities, such as singing, students are expected to participate fully.
Consistent attendance is particularly important to learning and is strongly encouraged. If you are going to be absent, please email or call me before the session you will be missing.
Activities/Homework
We will be doing a blend of activities to strengthen spoken German, build vocabulary, improve reading and writing abilities as well as introduce some dramatic elements. This course is designed with students' interests in mind. Homework will be assigned each month for the following month.
Class Fee
There is a $5 class fee that is to be paid no later than October 22nd. The fee is for special materials, treats and other items needed for instruction.
